Courtyard corners and market days

Some of a neighbourhood’s most interesting spaces sit just behind the main street. Dyson Place gives a Sharrow Vale outing another direction to explore, while occasional market days offer a different reason to return. Both reward leaving a little room in your plans.

Step into Dyson Place

Dyson Place is a courtyard development off Sharrow Vale Road with a mixture of shopping, food and other independent businesses. Its official map places the Artisans’ Yard just off the main courtyard, with Champion Works Studios behind it and another approach from Gordon Road. Have a look at that map before visiting if there is somewhere particular you want to find. Otherwise, take the detour as an invitation to notice a different arrangement of buildings and shopfronts.

A yard with another chapter

The scheme’s architects, AXIS Architecture, describe the transformation of a disused yard, incorporating a former church Mission Hall alongside converted and new buildings. They date the completed courtyard’s opening to summer 2020. That short history gives you something to look for as you explore: where older buildings meet newer work, and how a space behind the street becomes part of everyday neighbourhood life. You do not need specialist architectural knowledge to enjoy noticing a doorway, a roofline or a change in materials.

When the market comes around

Sharrow Vale’s community directory describes its market as an event held three times a year, organised by the Sharrow Vale Community Association. Its stalls span food, crafts, clothing and plants, with the market running from the Hunter’s Bar end towards Stewart Road. Check the organiser’s latest announcement before planning around it; this is an occasional event, not a weekly fixture. A reusable bag and a little spare time are useful companions, especially if you like discovering things without a shopping list.

An ordinary day works too

You do not need a market date to explore the neighbourhood. Use Dyson Place’s current business directory to choose a stop, then combine it with the shops on Sharrow Vale Road or a visit to the park. Individual businesses keep their own arrangements, so check those directly if your outing depends on a particular destination. Keep the plan small enough to change: a courtyard detour, a browse and time outdoors can be plenty for one afternoon.
