A little browse along Ecclesall Road

A park visit can turn into a bookshop browse, a search for a birthday card or a closer look at something made in Sheffield. Around Hunter’s Bar, leave a little room in the day for the shop window that catches your eye.

2 minute read ·

Start with Hunter’s Bar

Hunter’s Bar gives this part of the neighbourhood a useful meeting point between the park and the shopping streets. There is a small piece of history here, too: Historic England dates the listed tollgate to around 1810, with its relocation coming in the early twentieth century. The two stone piers survive with a renewed gate. Look for the detail from the surrounding pavement, then decide which direction takes your fancy. You need not turn an afternoon’s browsing into a checklist.

Make space for a book

Rhyme & Reason is an independent bookseller at 681 Ecclesall Road. If the park has put you in a reading mood, it makes a natural place to begin. You might go in with a title in mind, or give yourself permission to read a few back covers and discover something unexpected. A book also makes a lovely thread between the two halves of an outing: browsing among shelves, then finding your next chance to sit and read.

Look at the smaller things

Sheffield Makers Hunters Bar, at 667 Ecclesall Road, brings together work from local makers; its catalogue includes illustration, jewellery, pottery and homewares. Further along, The Famous Sheffield Shop at 475 Ecclesall Road stocks cutlery, silverware and souvenirs. These offer different ways of taking a little of the city home. Look at the maker’s name and the materials, and ask where a particular piece was made. A Sheffield subject, a Sheffield maker and a Sheffield shop are three different connections, each worth noticing.

Choose your own last stop

Mookau at 391 Ecclesall Road offers another sort of browse, with gifts, cards, jewellery and accessories. Pick one or two stops that interest you rather than trying to visit everywhere. Check individual shop websites before setting off, particularly if one place is the main reason for your trip. Afterwards, you can continue exploring the streets or make the park the quieter part of your day. The pleasure is having that choice.
